August News

  • Jyotsna Chandrani running the Nike 10k in London for Thare Machi Education

  • The Nike 10k run is on 31st August 2008, starting from Wembley and going across London. The unique feature of this run, organised by Nike is that on that particular day, many cities across the globe will be hosting the same event!
So there will be millions of people running at the same time, transcending borders, just like the TME organisation is doing every day.

  • Exciting news from TME

  • August has seen a further push in getting some of our translated lesson scripts recorded into the languages of our overseas partners. Lessons in the Indian language of Marathi have had a boost since we were introduced to Anjali Patel from Milton Keynes. Anjali is kindly working her way through recording a pile of scripts which have been translated by one of our Associates in London. We’ve also been lucky enough to find a willing Kannada speaker in Birmingham, who, as well as helping us to record translated scripts, has kindly offered to take the finished DVD lessons over to Bangalore with him at the end of September. Another language which has recently had a boost is Acholi (spoken in northern Uganda). Grace, the daughter of Rev. John Olanya, our partner in Gulu, came up from London for a day to record 3 new lessons - which takes the total number of lessons now available in Acholi to 15!

  • New partnership development

  • TME has entered into a partnership with Project Africa - a not for profit Organisation established in Sweden with a vision to empower African women with skills and resources to change and improve their lives.
In this partnership, TME has received two translated scripts in Swahili. Project Africa are in receipt of a full set of English DVDs plus Safe Water and Basic Hygiene in Swahili, along with a portable DVD player, despatched just recently.
This is how we like our partnerships to work; it is a real collaboration of two not for profit organisations.

  • EuroTalk Junior Language Challenge update

  • Over 2500 children signed up to take part in the EuroTalk Junior Language Challenge 2008, making this year's competition the best yet!
Altogether, they have raised £6,200 for the Thare Machi Education and their mission to provide educational facilities for some of the poorest communities in Africa.
300 children have since qualified for the regional semi-finals, where they will put their Vietnamese skills to the test, against each other and the clock. Approximately 40 semi-finalists will then advance to the Grand Final, which will take place during the Language Show 2008 on 31st October at the London Olympia.
