Helen Taylor Thompson's original vision inspired by the story of a girl rescuing Starfish was to reduce the large numbers of women becoming HIV positive through being forced into prostitution as a livelihood.
This followed research she carried out in Uganda and Kenya in the 1990's. She realised that the scale of the problem was so great and growing that technology was needed to deliver preventative education cost effectively.
As a result Thare Machi Education was registered as a charity and limited company in 2000, launched at the House of Lords and Canary Wharf in 2001 and with the first local partners in India in 2002.
Since then the project has been extended to India, Cambodia, South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Nepal..
